Aydın Commodity Exchange Chairman of the Board of Directors Fevzi Çondur said that the "White Gold" cotton input commodity experienced in the harvest season has started.
Condur stated that cotton producers had a difficult production season due to the increase in production costs and high inflation. The average cost of 1 kg of unseed cotton, which last year was 13 Liras and 25 Kurus, increased to around 22 Liras on average this year. However, when we look at the current cotton market, the sale of cotton, which was at level of 19 Liras last year, currently continues in the 19 lira band. Mr. Condur said that in the face of high costs, the industry has no expectations from the new season.
Condur stated the following in the earthquake that occured on February 6, factories in Kahramanmaras and Gaziantep were damaged and some business terminated their activities due to negative costs. This situation has negatively affected consumption in our country. It is estimated that our production, which was 1 millions in the 2022/23 season, will decrease to 700 thousand in 2023/24 season. Our consumption, which was around 1 million 800 thousand tons, has decreased to 1 million 200 thousand tons and the remaining amount is compensated through imports.
Evaluating the support amount of 1 lira and 60 kurus, Condur stated that we ask for our producers to be rewarded for their efforts for sustainable production in cotton. For this purpose, we demand that the support price of 1 lira and 60 kurus be increased in order too prevent our cotton producers from being negatively affected by the price fluctuations around domestic and foreign markets during the harvest period. We hope that the new season will be beneficial for our cotton producers, ginners and industrialists.
